Alejandro Buschmann Rubio is a full professor at the Universidad de
Los Lagos, obtaining its Ph.D. at the Pontificia Universidad Católica de
Chile. With over 100 peer-reviewed papers and book chapters, in aspects
of coastal ecology, seaweed aquaculture, focusing on the role on
integrated multitrophic aquaculture (IMTA) towards a sustainable
aquaculture development. Due to the scientific achievements, in 2006
was eligible as member of the Chilean Academy of Science and
President of the International Seaweed Association (ISAC). He was
recognized by the International Foundation for Science (IFS) with The
“Silver Jubilee Award” for its scientific achievements on seaweed
aquaculture. He has been part of editorial committees of relevant
scientific journals in his discipline. At the present is a researcher at “i-mar
Research Center” (www.i-mar.cl) and has been Director of Research and
Graduate School at the Universidad de Los Lagos. In addition, Dr. Buschmann has been designated in
different scientific panels of the Chilean Science Agency (CONICYT) as well as in national commissions
for graduate program quality certification. As a scientific consultant, he has been able to support seaweed
culture developments with the industry and the promotion of the use sustainable environmental
